Getting a copy in Massachusetts
Yes. Massachusetts law: a free copy in some cases. HIPAA, the federal law, gives you that right in all 50 states and DC. The provider has 30 days, plus one 30-day extension, and may charge a cost-based fee. As of October 3, 2026, Massachusetts law adds more: you get a free copy of your record in some cases.

Start with your provider. If you are refused or get no answer, you can file a complaint with the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
